A yellow fever epidemic occurred in Philadelphia during 1793 and spread very rapidly. This is a time when popular medicine advocated bleeding patients and people believed that “miasmas” or bad air created an environment for disease to spread. While the story is about a fictitious character named Matilda Cook, it contains characters based on people and groups that really existed during this time. Matilda is a 15-year-old girl living with her widowed mother and her grandfather, a retired Army Captain. The family runs a lively coffee shop in the heart of Philadelphia, respectable work for a widow and a retired Army Captain. Eliza is an African-American woman that does all the cooking at the coffee shop. She is the backbone of the coffee shop because apparently, Mrs Cook’s cooking is not very good. She is completely selfless and dedicated herself to others in need. Working for the Free African Society she made the rounds to help the sick when the epidemic hit hard even at risk to herself. It was hard, tiring and at times disgusting work but she never complained. This story is highly recommended for teenagers through adults.
