The Ocean at the End of the Lane

“The Ocean at the End of the Lane” is a tale about a lonely bookish seven-year-old whose life takes a terrifying turn into a dark and creepy reality. Neil Gaiman is the author of this classy novel. Gaiman’s sense of description and the way he puts words together really is interesting. His novel is a heroic tale about the age-old battle between childhood innocence and mythic forces. The novel will charm you, fill you with awe, make you feel on edge, surprise you, and make you want to keep on reading no matter what important obligations you might have waiting for you to accomplish. It is a tale about a lonely bookish seven-year-old whose life takes a terrifying turn into a dark and creepy reality. The child is never named, but in recent interviews, the author admits that this child is very much like he was at that age. The child lives in the lovely English countryside of Sussex the same environment where the author grew up. And like Gaiman, the child is wise, responsible, and moral beyond his years. The parents are blithely confident that nothing bad could happen to their brilliant bookish son in such a bucolic setting. But of course, bad things can and do happen, especially to the pure and innocent.

Good Omens

“Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch” comically examines the idea of the apocalypse, the conflict between good and evil, and humanity’s place in the universe. Two great guys Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are the authors of this awesome book. This book is the story of the apocalypse. A demon, named Crowley (an ex-angel who didn’t so much “fall” as saunter vaguely downwards), who actually really loves being on earth, is contacted to play his part in the birth of the Antichrist and to make sure he finds his appropriate home with a diplomat. (Think of the Omen). Unfortunately, Crowley really loves there being an earth and humans to “tempt” and living his (eternal) life. After accidentally misplacing the Antichrist, Crowley and his angel friend, Aziraphale (who owns a bookstore and equally loves living on earth) are on a mission to find him. It has an amazing cast of characters, including Adam (the Antichrist), his friends (a collective known as “Them”) and his Hellhound (named Dog). The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are joined by the slightly lesser-known “Four Bikers of the Apocalypse.” There are Witchfinders and a prophetess. In short, this novel presents a hilarious story about a nerdy angel & a sarcastic demon who team up to stop the young Antichrist from bringing about the apocalypse.

Neverwhere

“Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman” is an “Alice in Wonderland” tale but from a very different point of view, of a modern, alienated man who gets dragged down the “rabbit” hole. The imaginary world he enters is a dirty, somewhat graphic one about what falls through the cracks in our attention, as being lost or unimportant. In this strange world, the main character is carried along like the alienated observer he is. We gradually learn that there is some stranger directing evil. This stranger, called an angel, is confined in this world for its misdeeds: An agent that is completely immoral, but one that has the appearance of truth and perfection. In some ways, this is a classic manifestation of Lucifer. This angel, despite entrapment, manages to do some terrible things. The angel is well-hidden, and its actions are difficult to trace to their source. The alienated visitor becomes caught in a small team of individuals who, with mixed motives, are on the trail of this imprisoned being. I did not find that the characters were very well-developed, beyond stereotypes. Also, the pace of the story is slow in spots. There are some good plot twists, and the author displays considerable skill and imagination. This imaginary world and the story surrounding it in the book is dark and foreboding. The alienated visitor becomes by accident a great champion in the struggle to trace this hidden evil. In short, we recommend this novel because it displays a work of considerable imagination that can be easily appreciated.

Norse Mythology

Norse Mythology retells the Norse stories about the forming of the world, the creation of Yggdrasil and the Nine Worlds, how Odin lost his eye, how the gods got their treasures, Loki’s children, Thor’s journey to the land of the giants, the death of Balder, Ragnarok, and more. Neil Gaiman is the author of this book. The goal of this book is not to tell new stories, but to breath new life into the old stories. Gaiman stays true to the source materials and presents the stories of Thor and Odin and Loki and all of the Norse gods in a language that feels fresh and engaging. Gaiman has done all of the painful research for us and given us the old stories gift-wrapped in tight, modern language and a clarity and singular narrative that old Snorri Sturluson was incapable of providing. If you have a genuine academic interest in the Old Norse stories, you will learn more from spending a day with Gaiman’s Norse mythology than you will learn from spending a year sifting through the Prose and Poetic Edda and it will be a hell of a lot more fun.
