A Walk in the Woods

“A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail” is an inspiring and a truly fun read. Bill Bryson is the author of this book. His books include travel memoirs and books on language. His book “A Walk in the Woods” is an engaging light-hearted travelogue about the less traveled areas of Great Britain. As usual, Bill Bryson both educates and entertains as he moves through his travelogue. From the beginning of the book, Bryson is crystal clear that we know very little about Shakespeare. B.B. provides us with enough contextual information to help us draw our own conclusions. There are some very nice asides as Bryson explores not only the AT but its history, and the history of some of the sites that can be found along the way. There is some light invective about environmental impact man-made extinctions of certain flora and fauna, but Bryson doesn’t browbeat you with it. The guilt-level is low, while the point that we do have an impact on the world around us is still well made. In short, if you are looking for an armchair vacation, this might be it.

In a Sunburned Country

“In a Sunburned Country” is a charming biography of Shakespeare based on the fact that we know next to nothing about the man. Bill Bryson is the author of this book. Bill Bryson is a master storyteller, and this is his opus. His descriptions are beautiful, his perspectives poignant. The few times where Bryson (and Katz, half the time) wanders out of the forest into a tourist trap or a lodge makes you feel green and bright-eyed. The book dips in and out of modernity and “nature” (as socially constructed as it may be). The book starts out with a midlife decision to take a walk. It takes us to a funny scene in the local outdoor goods shop, and then through the woods with the overweight, bumbling Katz and a hilarious cast of characters they meet along the way. Bryson covers many subjects in this nonfiction account of his adventures and misadventures on the Appalachian Trail. Some of the most interesting topics are the history and geography of the AT, the trail culture, the endless fires of anthracite coal, and the history of the flora and fauna of the AT. I was off put by his stereotypical, cliché descriptions of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Tennesseans, and southerners. In short, this is still a rewarding read to learn about a somewhat hidden part of America.

At Home

“At Home: A Short History of Private Life” is the most delightful and entertaining book you will have touched in a long time. Bill Bryson is the author of this masterful book. Bill Bryson makes history very accessible with this easy-to-read and beautifully illustrated book. Bryson’s historical account of humankind’s domestic history is both fascinating and informative. Bill Bryson was inspired to write “At Home: A Short History of Private Life” after moving into a former Church of England rectory in the small village of Norfolk in the easternmost part of England. The idea came to him when he discovered a secret door in the attic. The tiny rooftop space about fifty feet above the ground provided a panoramic view of two ancient churches and the timeless English countryside. Bryson says the glorious view reminded him of the two thousand years of human activity and how little he knew about the history of the domestic world around him. He says, “We are so used to having a lot of comfort in our lives to being clean, warm and well-fed that we forget how recent most of that is. In fact, it took us forever to achieve these things, and then they mostly came in a rush. His book provides history about how it all happened. Bryson found, to his surprise, that what happens in the world, whatever is discovered, created or bitterly fought over, eventually ends up in our house. Wars, famines, the industrial revolution and the enlightenment are in the paint of our walls, the folds of our curtains and the water in our pipes.
