Truth & Beauty

The “Truth & Beauty: A Friendship” is a heartwarming story of true friendship through tough trials and tribulations. Ann Patchett is the author of this book. It is a beautifully written testament to love and friendship in a relationship. It shows the depths of a relationship with such honesty and force. Friendships are like spider webs beautiful, fragile, yet unbelievably strong and tenacious. This story of a friendship between two talented writers raises all sorts of questions about the random forces that mould us into the human beings we become. Lucy’s life and work was defined by one catastrophe cancer which destroyed her lower jaw, led to chemotherapy which impeded her normal physical development, and caused medical expenses which financially undermined Lucy’s already unstable family. The constant object of gawkers, Lucy grew to believe she was ugly, incapable of inspiring romantic love. Her friendships were desperate attempts to overcome this self-doubt, requiring total love and commitment. Because of her charm and ability, she was able to command this level of love, but because of her self-doubt, she was never quite able to believe in it. Overall, it’s a good story with some great points on friendship.

This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage

“This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage” is a good book for anyone who is at the age of marriage. Ann Patchett is the author of this book. Ann Patchett is such a good writer who knows how to engage the readers. This is an amazing book as a beautiful example of the craft of writing, but also for the lovely and thought to provoke content. The story begins with an uninvited guest at a christening party. The birth of Franny Keating, the second daughter of Beverly and Fix Keating, is being celebrated. Most of the guests are cops and their wives. But then a lawyer with the DA’s office, Bert Cousins, arrives. He wasn’t invited and only knows to Fix slightly. The party had been mentioned to him by one of the invited guests and he decided on his own to just show up. It is a fateful decision that will ultimately change the course of ten lives two families, six children and two married couples. On that sunny Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins meets Beverly Keating and is instantly attracted to her. Before the day is out, he has kissed her and things will never be the same again. Ultimately, the two marriages break up. Bert marries Beverly and they move to Virginia with Beverly’s two daughters. Bert’s four children stay in California with their mother, even though he tries to convince her that she, too, should move to Virginia. Over the years, the children make cross-country flights in summer to visit their non-custodial parents, and the Keating and Cousins children form their own lasting familial bond. They have a genuine affection for each other that was at first based on their mutual disappointment with their parents but that grew into something real and strong. Then one summer day in Virginia, something terrible happens to the children, something that will haunt them and their parents for the rest of their lives. Many years later, Franny is living in Chicago and working part-time as a waitress. She meets Leon Posen, a famous author whom she admires but who has not written a book in many years. She begins an affair with him and eventually tells him the story of her family. He turns the family story into a best-selling novel and the family tragedy is revealed to the world. In the end, Patchett’s archaeological digging through the lives of her characters works brilliantly. All is revealed, sometimes with humour, sometimes with pathos, but always with a tender understanding of the ties that bind us in families and circles of caring.

The Patron Saint of Liars

“The Patron Saint of Liars” is a beautiful story about a woman with great characters. Ann Patchett is the author of this book. This is an incredible storyteller who develops wonderful characters. The story is about a young woman who felt trapped in her life. It is a much-enjoyed novel told from the point of view of three people Rose, Son and Cecilia. Rose is damaged from her mother’s divorce and finds her one love in life is to get in a car and drive. She marries Thomas and he teaches her to drive, even though he later regrets it. Eventually Rose just drives right out of his life and the life of the mother she adored. She is pregnant so she goes to a home for unwed mothers and finds a remarkable future-reading nun, sister Bernadette. She stays and brings up her daughter Cecilia there and also marries the handyman at the home. His nickname is Son, the perfect name for such a warm, loving, and kind person who’s EQ is bulging at the top. Son raises Cecilia as his own daughter. All is happy until Rose receives a letter. Bel Canto and the State of Wonder take place in South America, the former in a Vice President’s house in the capital city and the latter in the deepest, darkest, Amazon jungle. Patron Saint of Liars takes place in ordinary neighbourhoods in the USA, one that you or I could have come from and yet Ann Patchett spins a fascinating and original story. Sister Bernadette, the nun who could predict the sex of a child or foresee the future is an endearing character just as Mother Corinne is strict and unloving. Blind Sister Evangeline who worked in the kitchen where Rose finds calmness and a love of cooking – is actually a lousy cook but a wonderful friend. Ann Patchett has certainly rubbed shoulders with nuns and one writes what one knows. It’s easy to lose sympathy for Rose but actually, she is a sad case. She runs from her unhappiness and can’t find a way to deal with it. In doing so she makes others very unhappy.  Of course, this is all wrapped in a very poignant story about unwed mothers decades again and the shame and sadness they faced and the very limited choices.
